Couples Therapy
It is possible to feel completely alone…
… in a room full of people you love and in a committed relationship that looks perfect.
No other relationship will challenge you quite like a long term, committed, monogamous one will.
Nor does any other relationship have the same potential to lead to healing and wholeness.
The trick is figuring out how to make it last!
How did we get here?
Emily and Amy, married for 16 years and together for 22, came in after Emily admitted that she had been unfaithful.
Amy, discovered a string of text messages between Emily and Emily’s first high school girlfriend. “We all know how powerful those first loves are! I cannot compete with that and I just don’t understand why you would do this to us.”
Tears were falling fast from both women with the heartache palpable in the room.
“Why?” is the question asked most often, and it leads to defending of positions.
This is the opposite of what we really want in our most intimate relationship.
It seems impossible to many who seek couples therapy that people can and do recover from all kinds of obstacles or betrayal, whether the lover is a person, or a drug of choice, or behavior that takes the place of reality.
Healthy, sustainable, life-giving connection requires courage and support.
Most humans on the planet, partner in response to what they experienced as little people.
Doing it differently so that hurts are resolved and growth, wholeness and fulfillment happen means learning new things about yourself and your partner, practicing new skills and taking new steps to bridge the gap.
Using skills and evidenced based practices developed over 26 years, I will guide you as you discover who you are as individuals and how that plays out in your marriage or partnership.
I will help you name what you want, discover how to work with your partner or spouse to achieve the relationship you want and how to sustain it.
Talking so you are understood and hearing so you understand are a great place to begin!
There is more than one way to accomplish anything.
Having the space to explore what you want in your marriage and discovering how to achieve that begins with support and practice.
When we practice this with someone who believes in our ability to change and grow, it becomes not only possible, it becomes desirable.
